Rising majestically on a rocky hill 130 meters above sea level, Rozafa Castle is the undisputed crown of Shkodra. Encircled by the meeting point of three rivers—the Buna, Drin, and Kir—this fortress has stood for over 2,500 years, offering a 360-degree panorama that stretches from the jagged peaks of the Albanian Alps to the shimmering waters of the Adriatic Sea.
A Legend Written in Stone
Rozafa is more than just limestone and mortar; it is built on a hauntingly beautiful legend. Local folklore tells of three brothers who struggled to build the castle walls, which crumbled every night. A wise old man revealed that a sacrifice was needed: the first wife to bring them lunch the next day must be walled into the foundations. The youngest brother’s wife, Rozafa, accepted her fate with one request—that her right eye, right hand, right foot, and right breast be left exposed so she could continue to see, caress, and feed her infant son. Today, the white kalk (lime) dripping from the walls is said to be the milk of the legendary mother.

What to Explore Within the Walls
- Three Courtyards of History: The castle is divided into three distinct sectors, each representing a different era—from the Illyrian foundations to the Venetian fortifications and the Ottoman administrative buildings.
- The Church-Mosque: Witness the fascinating Church of St. Stephen, which was later converted into the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Mosque, a physical timeline of the region’s shifting empires.
- The Captain’s Residence: Visit the Venetian-era museum housed within the walls to see ancient coins, tools, and weapons unearthed on-site.
